long-acting contraceptive agents: testosterone esters of cycloalkylcarboxylic acids
Authors
abstract
the synthesis of twenty five esters of testosterone (17β -hydroxyandrost- 4-en-3-one) is described. all esters are derivatives of cycloalkycarboxylic acids. some of the esters possess α- , β -and/or & - substitution in the ester side-chain. the work was undertaken in order to evaluate long-acting male antifertility effect of such esters. most of the compounds, especially compound no.1, were found to be active. compound no.1 is presently under clinical studies.

full textLong-lived testosterone esters in the rat.
Over the past decade it has become increasingly clear that steroid hormones are enzymatically esterified with fatty acids. These steroidal esters are the natural analogs of synthetic esters that are used therapeutically. One such family of pharmacological steroids is the synthetic alkyl esters of testosterone, androgens with great hormonal potency. We have investigated whether testosterone este...
full textLong-acting reversible contraceptives: intrauterine devices and the contraceptive implant.
The provision of effective contraception is fundamental to the practice of women's health care. The most effective methods of reversible contraception are the so-called long-acting reversible contraceptives, intrauterine devices and implants. These methods have multiple advantages over other reversible methods. Most importantly, once in place, they do not require maintenance and their duration ...
full textReducing barriers to the use of the intrauterine contraceptive device as a long acting reversible contraceptive.
The intrauterine device (IUD) is the oldest long acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) method. There remain widespread barriers to its general acceptance, although some have been overcome, others remain. These stem from a lack of understanding of uterine anatomy and physiology. Uterine measuring techniques did not become popular, probably because of the extra effort required prior to IUD inser...
full textEffects of immediate postpartum contraceptive counseling on long-acting reversible contraceptive use in adolescents
Background Adolescent pregnancy is a global public health problem, particularly repeated pregnancy. The best strategy to lower prevalence of adolescent pregnancy and repeated pregnancy is promoting highly effective long-acting contraceptive methods along with special counseling programs. Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is the ideal contraceptive of choice for adolescents. It is not ...
